CHARLESTON, S.C. - A $10 million expansion of the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Charleston is underway - an expansion that will allow about 200 engineers and technicians to now work under one roof. Currently those employees work out of 10 temporary buildings at the Charleston Naval Weapons Station. Officials broke ground on the project on Thursday. The 56,000-square-foot building, near the center's $27 million main complex, should be complete by the spring of 2007. Congress approved money for the expansion last year. The Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center is part of the Navy but develops communications systems for all the armed services and other federal agencies. It employs about 1,400 workers in Charleston and about 900 in other locations. Information from: The Post and Courier, http://www.charleston.net
