Efforts to remove the shroud of secrecy surrounding RAF Menwith Hill are being called "historic" following the release of their first ever published document. Although the two sided A4 letter only confirms the barest of operational details, it publically states the role and purpose of the base for the first time on paper. Details on staff numbers, defence systems and accountability are given, as are reassurances the base operates within the confines of the European Convention of Human Rights. There is also confirmation of Menwith Hill's possible role in the next generation of national missile defence, nicknamed Son of Star Wars, if a land base system is proposed by the American government. For RAF commander Sqn Ldr Humphrey Vincent, the decision, which was two years in the making, is an historic gesture. "It's taken considerable time convincing the government", said Sqn Ldr Vincent. "But at last, the base will have the chance to speak for itself rather than putting everything through Whitehall. "Obviosly we still have to consider national security, especially after the events of September 11, and I am most sure most people will appreciate this. "It's a case of a step at a time." For members of Harrogate Council, who jointly sent a letter to Tony Blair in protest over the lack of consultation in regard to Menwith Hill and its future, the press release is a pivotal document. Leader Geoff Webber confirmed discussions between the council and MoD officials had finally taken place several weeks ago after several cancellations.
