PLESETSK, Arkhangelsk Region (Interfax-AVN) - The plans to deploy Russian Space Forces are taking into the account the threats emerging with the construction of the third position of the U.S. missile defense system in Eastern Europe, Russian Space Forces Commander Col. Gen. Vladimir Popovkin.

"The plans to develop the Space Forces were elaborated to counter any new threats if they emerge," Popovkin said responding to a question as to whether the program to
develop military forces in space is a response to U.S. actions in creating a global missile defense system.

The plans on the development of the Space Forces began to form after the U.S. withdrew from the Russian-U.S. Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) treaty of 1972 when the U.S. began to create a global system of missile defense, Popovkin said

"Currently we do not see any changes [in the U.S. position on missile defense]," Popovkin said.
