Prague, Sept 7 (CTK) - Several dozen opponents of the possible location of a US missile defence base in the Czech Republic staged a quiet protest at Old Town Hall on Thursday.

The move was also devised as an invitation to the march Through Light Against Darkness, to be held on September 11, on the fifth anniversary of the 2001 attacks in the US.

"We want to express our no to terrorism, but also our no to violence, no to wars and no to bases," said Jan Tamas, spokesman for the No to Bases protest group.

No to Bases was established in July 2006. It has launched a petition for a referendum on the stationing of the base. Tamas said that it had collected 4000 signatures.

The campaign is supported by three dozen organisations and parties, including the Communist Youth Association, the Muslim League, the Socialist Organisation of Workers and the Humanistic Movement.

In July, a US expert team visited the Czech Republic to inspect the possible suitable localities for the bases in the military grounds Libava, north Moravia, Boletice, south Bohemia, and Brdy, central Bohemia.

Poland is also being considered in connection with the location of the US missile defence system in Europe.
