WASHINGTON, August 29 (Itar-Tass) - Making statements that the American missile defence system in Europe will be unable to intercept Russian intercontinental ballistic missiles Pentagon is deluding the public, Professor Theodore Postol of Massachusetts Institute of Technology said at the US Congress on Tuesday. The expert had in the past worked with the US Department of Defence. The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) organized the Congress hearings.

Director of the Missile Defence Agency (MDA) Office of the Secretary of Defence, Pentagon, Lt.-Gen. Henry Obering has repeatedly stated that the US plans are not aimed at deterring Russia’s nuclear potential, because 10 ICBM interceptors in Europe are unable to offer resistance to hundreds of Russian intercontinental ballistic missiles and thousands of warheads installed on them.

However, mathematical calculations of American scientists based on data on the missiles’ velocity, trajectory and range prove the contrary, which was clearly demonstrated by Professor Postol, who is a physicist by education, with the help of diagrams. One of the diagrams showed, in particular, as an American antimissile in a matter of minutes intercepts a Russian intercontinental ballistic missile launched on targets in the north-western direction.

The scientist claims that the MDA trying to prove that the American missile defence system in Europe is incapable of resisting the Russian nuclear potential is openly distorting facts, in particular, by knowingly exaggerating velocity characteristics of Russia’s intercontinental ballistic missiles and understating the velocity of its own interceptor missiles.
