Prague, Sept 9 (CTK) - The Czech Republic should participate in a missile defence system as part of NATO and not only in cooperation with the US, Defence Minister Jiri Sedivy said in an interview for the daily Pravo Saturday.

Czech ambassador to NATO Stefan Fuele said that the decision on the most suitable locality for stationing a U.S. missile defence base in Central Europe would be probably postponed by the US until December, after the November NATO summit to be held in Riga.

The United States wants to station radars and 10 missiles in Europe that would intercept missiles launched by risk countries, among which the US counts mainly North Korea and Iran.

The US is also considering building its missile base in Poland. Part of the equipment, possibly radars, can be stationed in the Czech Republic, and the other part in Poland. New Foriegn Misniter Alexandr Vondra said that he would support such a variant.

According to public opinion polls, most Czechs oppose building a missile defence base on Czech territory. Of the parties in parliament, only the governing Civic Democrats (ODS) support the idea.
