Both women walked into the base earlier today and were apprehended by armed Ministry of Defence police. They got as far as the yellow line at the entrance to the base. At the time of their arrrest, they were told that they were in breach of their bail conditions regarding their earlier arrest on April 1st 2006, under the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act (also introduced on April 1st 2006). This is disputed by Ms John, who recieved written confirmation from Harrogate Police station that she is not under any bail conditions. Both women are frustrated that a decision has been deffered for a third time by the Attorney General and the Crown Prosecution Service on whether to charge them for criminal tresspass under the SOCPA legislation. They were told yesterday to return to Harrogate Police station for a fourth time on Saturday June 17th to find out if they face charges. Before her arrest, Helen John (68) said; "The SOCPA legislation is being used to prevent people with legitimate fears opposing the illegal actions of the British and US Governments. It may be labelled ‘Criminal Trespass’, but I will continue to take necessary action to stop the crimes that are being committed in our names in these bases and facilities." Sylvia Boyes (62) added: "I have to say that the threat of 51 weeks in prison and or a fine of £5000 will not deter me from taking such actions. In times such as these perhaps the prisons ought to be full of dissenters." |
