WRITE TO YOUR MP

Writing to an MP can raise the MPs knowledge and awareness of an issue considerably - they have a lot of issues to juggle and it's key that we try to make sure they consider CND's issues to be high up the list.

Why not write a letter to your MP about one of Yorkshire CND's issues which concerns you. Tell them about Star Wars, Trident submarines, nuclear convoys or space weapons. Ask them for their opinion and what the relevant Minister plans to do about the issues you've raised. You should get a response from your MP and, after a while, your MP should forward you whatever response the relevant Minister makes to your questions too. Remember, we always want to see any response you get from your MP.

E-MAIL THE PRIME MINISTER

OK, so the Prime Minister is unlikely to read the e-mail himself, but it will be added to a pile and the PM gets a monthly round-up of issues that people have e-mailed about. If he finds that he is getting a constant number of e-mails about, say, concern over space weapons, then he may remember that when deciding policy. If we want the PM to act, it helps to tell him we are concerned.

WRITE TO YOUR LOCAL PAPER

Raise an issue you're concerned about or that's in the news by writing to your local paper. Newspapers are always keen for letters on interesting topics (especially ones that are current) and a lot of people read the letters pages - including most local MPs. Get your views in print by writing a letter to your local paper.

Make sure the letter is nice and short (around 50 or so words is good) and it stands out as a little different or quirky - so you catch the Editor's attention. The best time to write on an issue is when you can relate it to a national or local news story that's already going on. Your letter can then add a new angle to the story.

We always like to see copies of any newspaper coverage our supporters achieve.

JOIN A DEMONSTRATION

There are regular demonstrations across Yorkshire organised by Yorkshire CND and other peace groups. You can join the weekly demos at Menwith Hill organised by CAAB, the monthly demos there organised by the women's campaign or the regular large demonstrations at Menwith, Fylingdales and elsewhere organised by Yorkshire CND.

Demonstrations allow you to voice your opposition publicly, to raise the issue on the agenda of the media and politicians and force the public to think about what you're trying to say. They are a key tool to grassroots action. CND has a long and colourful protest history and you can be part of it. Check out the website regularly and subscribe to the Yorkshire CND newsletter "Action for Peace" to find out about up-coming demos

RUN A STALL IN YOUR TOWN CENTRE

If we want people to be concerned about the key issues that we're concerned about, it helps to tell them about it! Running a stall is a simple way to raise the profile of an issue and Yorkshire CND will help as much as we can to provide you with flyers, pamphlets, stickers, posters, banners and whatever else you need to run a successful stall in your town centre.

A stall can help you collect petition signatures, increase public interest and support, highlight the issue and promote CND at the same time. If you would like to find out more about running a Yorkshire CND stall contact us here.

SIGN A PETITION

It's a simple thing to do, it takes almost no time at all and it can help make a difference.
