at the American base at
Menwith Hill
near Harrogate, North Yorkshire
(a base crucial to the American Defence System)

Part of an International Day of Protest against the Weaponisation of Space (STOP 'STAR WARS') called for by the Global Network Against Nuclear Weapons and Power in Space . Actions will be happening round the world.

No Missile Defense system would have prevented the terrible terrorist attacks on 11 September.  Menwith Hill and Fylingdales will be crucial in the American Missile Defense system (AMD) if formal consent is given by Tony Blair to use these bases.  We must STOP 'STAR WARS'. The tragic events of 11 September reveal how Star Wars will not offer any real protection from those who are determined to attack the U.S or any other country.  The demonstration will also incorporate protest against any military action in response to the terrorist attacks.

INFORMATION FOR THE DAY

• Everyone is welcome to join the demonstration.  It is very important that this demonstration is peaceful and non-violent and we request that this is respected.

• CAAB will be at the Main Entrance from 9.30 am onwards…….. The police will probably ask us to park on Forest Moor Road - walk to the Main Entrance.

• The security fence is alarmed and the CCTV cameras are working.  The level of policing has been increased since the Greenpeace action in July and 11 September.

• Veggies will be selling food. 

• Come with warm waterproof clothes, games and banners or whatever you would like to do.

• Stewards will have information and they will also be available to help.

• There will be an information point near the Main entrance that will have up to date information, first aid, rubbish bags etc.

Through out the day anyone and everyone is invited to come to the PA system and publicly say they are against STAR WARS and to say why.

Veggies will sell their delicious food, music and a choir will entertain us, drumming, people will be invited to demonstrate in whatever peaceful way their protest against 'STAR WARS' and to reflect the international crisis.

2.15 pm - Walk round the base with banners - stops on the way to learn about the base and see the two Space Based Infra Red System (SBIRS) radomes.

Back to the Main entrance - drumming and 'send off ' speech by George Monbiot and representative from CAAB.

The demonstration will end at 4 pm.

DIRECTIONS TO MENWITH HILL

There is no public transport to Menwith Hill - Yorkshire CND are arranging some minibus transport from Leeds contact them for more details. You could also group together to share cars, hire a mini-bus or coach or come by bike!

By car:     From the South - A1 - turn off at Wetherby junction to Harrogate - through Harrogate on A59 Harrogate to Skipton road - Menwith Hill is 8 miles out of Harrogate - passed the Black Bull pub on right - sign to RAF Menwith Hill - turn right - down Cold Cotes Road - turn left - you will come to the Main entrance where the demonstration will be.  From the North - Al then follow directions as above.

By train: To Harrogate - arrange own transport to Menwith Hill please.

Menwith Hill is surrounded by four busy roads, and the traffic moves very fast so please take lots of care when walking around the base or standing near the Main entrance.  Peace camp corner towards Forest Moor has some space where you can sit off the road and the footpaths across the sports field and across the orchid field are also off the road – the sports field has walls at either end of the footpath.
