Lakenheath

28 March 2004

Researching  for CAAB round JAC Molesworth, USAF Mildenhall, USAF Lakenheath and the Deep Space Facility and Near Space Center last weekend proved useful.

However Lindis was again spuriously arrested by PC Curtis (Ministry of Defence Police Agency) at USAF Lakenheath.  She spent some time witnessing and protesting at the Main entrance to USAF Lakenheath using the US flag upside down with the words "Independence FROM American" written on it.

Lindis was arrested for an alleged 'obstruction of the highway' and taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Station.  She spent all of 15 minutes in custody.  Sergeant Warby (Suffolk Police) released Lindis without charge saying that she 'may have obstructed the highway' (she did not) but that she was 'not obstructing now'.

Peace Protesters Invade Air Base

4 July 2003

Fourth of July 2003 saw a Peacemakers' Ball at the gate of U.S.A.F. Feltwell as well as the usual U.S. services party inside. Billed as an "Independence from America" event, it was organised by the Theatre of War and sponsored by Lakenheath Action Group. There were ballgowns, tiaras, a Nuclear Weapons Fashion Show -- everything from mini-nukes to Trident and B61s was on parade -- and lots of music, dancing, picnicking and general fun.

We started at the Main Gate of U.S.A.F. Lakenheath and moved on to Feltwell about the time that people began streaming in for the traditional festivities. Many people -- on foot and in cars -- passed by our banners and placards. The Declaration of Independence from America, suitably amended for the local situatiion, was read at both venues.

There was perfect weather and the two dozen or so people attending were quite convinced that campaigning can be relaxing and fun (at times)! We are definitely planning to make this an annual event.

Lindis Percy (Co-Coordinator of the Campaign for the Accountability of American Bases - CAAB) witnessed and protested at USAF Lakenheath UK with the US flag with 'STOP STAR WARS' written on it.  She was standing quietly with the outstretched flag on the public road which runs through the base and which has been temporarily closed since 11 September 2002.

Lindis was arrested (spuriously) by Ministry of Defence police (MDP) on the pretext 'to prevent a breach of the peace' (there was no breach of the peace).  Under the circumstances she declined to get into the police car and was forced in by two MDP.

While forcing Lindis into the police car Sergeant Rogers (MDP) said that he was in the middle of 'an emergency'.  Lindis asked him why he was dealing with her rather than dealing with the 'emergency'?  He said that he may have 'something' on his hands - and said it might be 'white powder'.  He went on to say that he may have to take her to hospital.

Lindis was taken out of the base but as her car was parked at the other end of the closed road she walked straight back  to collect it.  She was continually blocked by the MDP who prevented her from returning to her car. She was again arrested for 'obstruction of a police officer in the execution of his duty'.

While waiting in the police vehicle Lindis insisted that the MDP who were escorting her to Newmarket police station, inform the custody officer of the potentially serious incident of the anthrax scare on the base.  She had to point out to the officers that Sergeant Rogers may have contaminated her, the other officers dealing with the first arrest, the police car and potentially the hospital and the police station.

Lindis was told that although a building on the base had been sealed off by the American authorities due to a suspected anthrax incident Sergeant Rogers had 'not entered the building'. Later she was told that the base had been given the 'all clear'.

Lindis was released three hours later with no action being taken.  She is still under arrest for 'to prevent a breach of the peace';  the arresting officer failed to 'dearrest' her.

The actions of Sergeant Rogers are very serious.  It was quite clear that Sergeant Rogers either was behaving in this way to frighten Lindis or did believe that he had 'something' on his hands.  Either way there are serious issues of concern involving public health, the cavalier manner in which the MDP handled the incident and possibly an alleged crime committed by Sergeant Rogers under the new Anti-Terrorism Act 2001 involving a possible 'BIOHAZARD incident' hoax.

Lindis has made a formal complaint to the Chief Constable of the MDP.  She has also included this incident in a written submission to the Defence Committee who were meeting on 30 January 2002 on the subject of 'Defence and Security in the UK. She had also addressed concerns on behalf of CAAB to the other items on the agenda including National Missile Defense.

Later after requesting the return of the US flag (which was at the centre of an appeal in the High Court, London before Christmas and in which Lindis was successful) she was threatened with having her driver's window smashed by PC Paul Glover (MDP) after she declined to wind her window fully down.

The US flag was later returned to Lindis while she sat patiently on the base in her car.

USAF Lakenheath is the home of the 48th Fighter Wing and contains a nuclear weapons store.
