RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany (USAFENS) -- Department of Defense officials announced May 20 that Gen. Gregory S. Martin, U.S. Air Forces in Europe commander, will assume command of the Air Force Materiel Command at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, and Gen. Robert H. Foglesong, the Air Force vice chief of staff at the Pentagon, will assume command of USAFE here in late June.

The USAFE commander also commands the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s Allied Air Forces Northern Europe (AIRNORTH) headquarters, and is the Air Force component commander for the U.S. European Command. Gen. Martin has been the USAFE and NATO AIRNORTH commander here since January 2000. He previously served as Principal Deputy, Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition, at the Pentagon, Washington, D.C.

Gen. Martin entered the Air Force in June 1970 with a commission from the U.S. Air Force Academy. In addition to flying 161 combat missions in Southeast Asia, he commanded the 67th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Kadena AB, Japan; the 479th Tactical Training Wing, Holloman AFB, N.M.; the 33rd Fighter Wing, Eglin AFB, Fla. and the 1st FW, Langley AFB, Va. He also served as the Joint Staff's J-8 Vice Director and the Air Force's Director of Operational Requirements, both at the Pentagon, Washington, D.C. Gen. Martin is a command pilot with more than 3,800 flying hours in various aircraft, including the AT-38, F-4 and F-15.

Gen. Foglesong is currently serving as the vice chief of staff of the Air Force in Washington, D.C.

Previously, he served as deputy chief of staff for Air and Space Operations, U.S. Air Force headquarters at the Pentagon, Washington, D.C.

He earned his bachelor of science in chemical engineering in 1968, master of science degree in chemical engineering in 1969 and his doctor of philosophy in chemical engineering in 1971, all at West Virginia University.

The general earned his pilot wings at Columbus AFB, Miss. in 1973. He is a command pilot and has served an aviation career, including more than 4,000 flying hours, primarily in fighter and training aircraft such as the F-16, F-15, A-10 and AT/T-38.

Serving as commander five times, Gen. Foglesong commanded Detachment 1, 24th Air Defense Squadron, Malmstrom AFB, Mont.; the 49th Component Repair Squadron, Holloman AFB, N.M.; the 14th Flying Training Wing, Columbus AFB, Miss.; the 51st Fighter Wing, Osan AB, South Korea; and 12th Air Force and U.S. Southern Command Air Forces, Davis-Monthan AFB, Ariz.
