18 July 2001 - CAAB was present at the USAF base at Croughton, Northamptonshire to witness and protest at the involvement of US bases in the UK with the American Missile Defense system.

A new perimeter security fence has recently been erected at USAF Croughton.  Lindis Percy was still easily able to enter the base undetected and go into the 'restricted area' of the US Embassy which now has a double row of weld mesh fencing topped with coils of razor wire. There are CTTV cameras at strategic points.  Despite this Lindis researched round the 'secure' and internal operations area for over an hour.  She finally decided to leave the operational area and alerted the US 'security police' of her presence by phoning from an entrance to the operations building.  Eventually two US 'security police' arrived and asked her to go.  She declined to take any instructions from them and said she would leave when the UK Ministry of Defence police (MDP) arrived.  The incident was videoed all the time by the US personnel.

Lindis sat quietly on the floor of the entrance waiting for the MDP for about half an hour displaying the US flag with STOP STAR WARS on the ground in front of her.  While she waited for the MDP she talked to the US security police about the American Missile Defense programme and that the world was being put in crisis by George W Bush and his goverment.

After sometime there were clear instructions to remove Lindis by force which they did. She was removed by four US 'security police' to outside the operational building but still within the 'restricted' area.  When the MDP finally arrived Lindis insisted that they took the names of the US personnel (US security police officer De Silva had refused to give his name and no name was displayed on this uniform) and before finally leaving she insisted that the MDP seize the American video of the incident.  Lindis is to make a complaint of common assault by the four US 'security police' and the video will be put in as evidence of the assault.

NOTE:
The US 'security police' were issued with new instructions after a series of serious violence to Lindis Percy and others.  This is the first incident since 1995 that the US 'security police' have touched Lindis Percy.  It is a serious incident given that the MDP, not the Americans, have to deal with British citizens.

USAF Croughton is a High Frequency Receiving site operated and controlled by the USAF's 422nd Air Base Squadron and known as their 'Communications Gateway to Europe'. It is part of the US military's Digital European Backbone communications network located throughout the UK. It is also the focal point for the MOD/Defence Estate Organisation activities for USAF Fairford, Welford and Uxbridge.
